Retreat, Who Me?

Retreats, you hear about them all the time. When I used to watch soap operas, their solution to every problem was to go to some exotic locale and "think about things. " Consequently when we had a problem I used to tell my husband we should go to Fiji to think about it. He didn't find it funny.

People go to retreats for many reasons. It is basically to check out for a bit, get away from your normal life. They are usually held in a rural area, away from the noise and bustle of ordinary life. What no ringing phones, screaming kids, barking dogs, demanding bosses? Sign me up. I could use a little me time.

There are many reasons that retreats are done. They can be spiritual, healing, spa like, for detox, for couples, and even for work. You get the idea. Get away from it all and put things into perspective.

It's not a bad idea. We all live in a world that is too fast and too scheduled. Our calendars are so full, it seems impossible to accomplish everything we think we must do. Women, in particular feel they must do it all. They strive to work, be a good wife and mother, keep a perfect house, and serve the community. No wonder we get crabby on occasion.

Most of us do not allow ourselves time to do nothing. We feel guilty to just sit outside and enjoy the beautiful day. There must be something that needs to be done and God forbid we waste time just sitting. I used to think that way.

As I've gotten older, I relish a few minutes to just sit. I don't feel guilty or that it's a waste of time. I think of it as recharging. After those few minutes, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes next.

Hey, if a few minutes can recharge you, think what a weekend or even a week in a peaceful setting can do. Are you ready to go yet?
